Moderation

Little reminder

TuxFamily is an association which aims to promote Free Software (thus it is a non-profit purpose). To this end, TuxFamily offers Internet hosting services for free, on demand via our panel. These hosting services are aimed at individuals, organizations and projects that contribute concretely to the world of Free Software/Culture. Not everyone can benefit from our services and therefore you'll have to go through the moderation process.

Moderation rules

When you ask for a hosting service on TuxFamily, you have to go through the moderation process. A moderator or administrator have a look at your project description and make sure it fits the requirements to be hosted on our platform.

If everything is fine, your project is accepted otherwise it is refused.

Projects that will be accepted :

Projects that will be refused:

  • Projects that just use free contents/software (typically: CMS, forums, ...) without creating new ones.
  • Projects whose contributors regularly use free software (e.g. operating systems, desktop environments, browsers, ...) but that have no relation with the creation of Free software/content.
  • The pictures of your dad's last vacations in St-Barazin-les-Tougouda
  • The website of your little brother's Counter-Strike team, check out http://jeuxlibres.net/ instead
  • Your grandma's cooking lessons (however, if she is a cordon bleu, she can still send us a cake)
  • Requests to "test" our platform or a software (even a free one). TuxFamily is not a test platform, you must have a free, definite project to be hosted.
  • Student projects that will die in a few months. We don't have enough resources to be a "throwable ISP"
  • The nth revolutionary Linux distribution of the day. There already exist many distributions for various needs and many of them are already highly configurable and/or simple enough. So, please, stop requesting 5 GB of disk space for the 42 pre-releases of your <insert popular distribution here>-based distribution with a custom wallpaper and five extra pre-installed packages that will ease everybody's life (c). Those 5 GB of saved space will allow us to host 51 regular, pertinent projects. If by chance you have reasons to believe that your distribution is daring, pertinent or even original, then you can submit it to our moderation process :)
  • The hosting of a complete web service which is not by itself a contribution to Free Software/Culture. Typical example: you have developped a PHP web game, released under a free license. Its code, (and what generally comes with it: repositories, offical website, bugtracker, users forum, access to mailing lists, ...) is by itself a contribution to Free Software, and thus can be hosted on the TuxFamily's web infrastructure. However, TuxFamily does not aim at hosting a complete instance of this game, coming along with thousands of users and the consequent processing power. Still, hosting a demo instance remains possible.

You can also read The moderating policy for more information.

How to make a request

  • Politely
  • For each request (WEB, MySQL / PostgreSQL databases...), you have to provide a description.
  • Make it nice and clear otherwise it might be refused. That's not a big deal but it is time consuming for every one...
  • Do not hesitate to explain the purposes of your websites, the licenses...(one of those for example) no licence = project refused
  • Tip : even if you make multiple requests in a short amount of time, you can copy/paste your project's description it is easy to do and will prevent bad surprises.
  • Remember that your website description will be placed on the public list of all the hosted websites : hence, just copy/paste the description you made for your group (or better: enhance it)

Moderation issues

Moderators are humans and can make mistakes ! So, if you feel bad about the moderator's decision, follow those steps :

  • Send an email to modo at staff dot tuxfamily dot org with an explicit subject such as "Moderation error"
  • In this email, give your best description of the project, give the licenses, answer to the question that was in the refuse message

If we did made a mistake, we will ask you to submit your project again. In the other case, we will give you a hard time and throw you some peanuts ;)
